Guadalcanal was my real life introduction to the series. It was good to circle back to it as my first full game with Vassal. Those maps are still my favorite in all of the series even if they have a lot of terrain grey area. Lots of color and interesting areas to fight over, but not as crowded or dense as the Kokoda ones.
Also had the "cooler" colored marker sheet which I always preferred over the orange/red.
Some of those scenarios are a real slog. I'm in awe of anyone who can finish the campaign. I'd put it 3rd behind Eastern Front Deluxe and the original Bulge in terms of difficulty.
I was witholding comment while more ribbons were going out, because I have a Bulge Ribbon still in the queue :) But those seemed to have stopped.
For solo plays, I didn't find Guadalcanal to be that bad. The cave scenarios on Tulagi can go on and on and I can't imagine doing that as a shared play though... The thing is, most scenarios have a very strict casualty limit for the Marines, so even with a long turn count, the actual action is very short. Its just about manuevering into the perfect position and timing it right with support fire.
I almost wonder if your memory is maybe mixing in some of the Jungle Fighting expansion, where there are repeated scenarios of brigade level actions across that thin strip of the map between the Edson's Ridge insert and the coast... those were slogs :)
