Honoring Our Best, Vol. 23

Where there is a will, there is a way. Despite the infamous fact that nearly every single scenario requires terrain modifications to the otherwise beautiful maps, TheDoctor was able to ignore the forests, visualize the fields, and reduce mountains to molehills with sheer mental brawn. On August 20th the last imaginary battle came to a close, and the Fall of France tour was complete!

TheDoctor, in recognition and commemoration of your accomplishments, you are hereby awarded this ribbon:

1940: The Fall of France

nice one, 140 turns should take a while to play.

2012-08-30 08:42

Well so much for the idea of playing this one ftf...

2012-08-30 09:54

dude you've got 30 days! THIRTY DAYS! Man up and roll some dice! :-D

2012-08-30 11:52

Easily said, my friend, we are talking some serious table space for the month!!! Where will I eat or work. Of course those are secondary issues and only necessary to make sure that I can make it physically to the end of the month...

2012-08-30 14:56

Matt, stop whining....

Shad will be leading from the front !! :-)

(edited 2012-08-30 15:34)

Honoring Our Best, Vol. 22

It is with great pleasure that today I award our first paired set of Tour of Duty medals! War on the Equator was recently played from start to finish entirely face-to-face by Matt W and Hugmenot. Ok, it's only 6 scenarios... but still, on August 18th our first tour done entirely face-to-face!

End Result? 2 wins, 2 draws, and 2 losses.

Final Ratings? 3.67 / 5, both of them.

Ok, right, well, that's a bit boring!

Matt W and Hugmenot, in recognition and commemoration of your accomplishments, you (plural!) are hereby awarded this ribbon:

War on the Equator

What's next, lads?

On the Equator, eh? Heh. Congrats.

2012-08-27 19:47

No kidding, the average rating as well...

(I am also somewhat disappointed I failed to see the obvious joke that you have made. I resolve to be more witty next time!)

(edited 2012-08-27 22:14)

Well, my sense of humor is notoriously deplorable - or so note ~ 500 students per semester or you can take TheDoctor's word for it! He suffers on a daily basis.

Shad, to show you my "slow" side, btw, I didn't recognize the username of one of our awardee's ... Hug-me-not. TheDoctor had to point that out to me! I thought it was French Hew-mee-know or such. ::facepalm::

2012-08-27 23:08

Fear not! I have lowered my opinion of you accordingly. ;-)

2012-08-28 18:32

Special thanks go to Daniel who had to put up with the Ecuador troop "quality".

2012-08-29 14:25

WARNING: politically incorrect and inflammatory statements to follow...

"Boring"?!?, Really, "boring"? This was a classic south of the border matchup between raging machismos! Full of passion and pathos, our combat raged for longer than most would expect of a true South American soap opera (although we were missing the buxom distaff). The Ecuadorians sped off to an early lead fueled by their incredible manly virtues. The Peruvians countered with a glorious comeback, winning the most involved scenario (Land, Sea and Air) for the first time in history and with a must win situation to pull even in the campaign pulled out a win in the final scenario.

Truly glorious. I can only assume that your attribution of the results as "boring" to an anglo-centric worldview which denigrates the military virtues of these powerhouses...

2012-09-06 12:34

Leading the Ecuadorians was a learning experience as it took a while to figure out what was reasonable to accomplish with such poor quality troops. It was fun though and it also helps that the first 5 scenarios are well balanced.

Next on the list? Indian Unity.

Honoring Our Best, Vol. 21

Small but potent, the ten battles featured in North of Elsenborn have resisted completion for three and a half years. It took the efforts of one of our most studious veterans, plloyd1010, for the Siegfried Line to finally break.

On June 24th plloyd1010 became the first man to break through the line and opened up the road to the German heartland.

plloyd1010, in recognition and commemoration of your accomplishment, you are hereby awarded this ribbon:

I was out of ideas so turned to Peter for help on this ribbon design. I'll let him fill us in on his inspiration when he has time...

2012-07-09 13:27

I guess Andrew is looking for another “coffee moment”. We'll see if this provides it.

When he asked if I had any ideas, I first thought about the colors of the division patches for the units involved. Those would be the 1st Infantry, 9th Infantry and 3rd Armored, on the American side; and the 12th Infantry, 89th Infantry and 9th Panzer for the Germans. That gave me 6 colors to try to fit on the ribbon. I also thought about the purpose and result of the campaign, which is to cutoff and surround the Germans.

I decided that squeezing the Germans in the middle (black & white) with a lot of American army green, and stripes for division colors. That is the ribbon story. We actually just played the module to see if we could stick with it long enough to get a ribbon. If Charles Fitch ever signs up, he deserves the ribbon too.

Now Shad, why do want people looking into my fevered mind? Trying to spread the madness?

(edited 2012-07-09 15:33)

"He pretends to be crazy in order to drive us all crazy" - Savielly Tartakower

Congratulations on the ribbon! I like the design.

2012-07-09 16:35

Trying to spread the madness?

Indeed! I like this ribbon very much, but we shall not discuss the first iteration, the explanatory email for which ended with the line "I may have gotten carried away"... :-D

Good work, Peter! Now go get another. ;-)

2012-07-09 21:29

Congrats

2012-07-10 01:50

Will the olive drab show when worn on your parade dress tunic !

I like the combo though.

(edited 2012-07-10 22:39)

Thanks guys. Army OD green never fades, and red, white & blue don't run.
