Introduction |
---|
With the naval base at Temryuk fallen to a dawn attack by the Romanian 6th Cavalry Division, the monitor Zheleznyakov's crew can either scuttle their ship, surrender it, or try to break out into the Sea of Azov. Choosing to go down fighting, Senior Lietenant A. E. Kharchecnko set out along the Kuban River to fight their way to the sea. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Romanian horsemen rode right down to the riverbanks to exchange fire with the passing monitor, and shot away most of its unarmored fittings including the rudder and steering wheel. But Zheleznyakov kept forging ahead, breaking out in the Temryuk Bay and into the Sea of Azov, though she would run aground soon afterward in no small part due to the damage suffered in this encounter. |

The gunboat Zheleznyakov counter is included in the Edelweiss IV countermix but was not available in the units OOB. I entered the only Soviet Navy unit as a placeholder but when the Zheleznyakov is entered into the OOB this item should be replaced. (Matt W

This has to be the shortest game of PG I have played. So short that I could include every detail in this AAR rather than my short narative. Setup: Russian vessel, Zheleznyakov, starts off the south edge of board 3 to enter on turn 1 at a speed of 3 as designated in the scenario. Romanians start out along the banks of the river. 37mm AT with transport wagon at the first bend, 0712. Next 2 cav with a Captain a 0912, another 2 cav at 0911 with an LT. The next 37mm AT gun with transport at 0809 and the third stack of 2 cav with the other LT and LTC at 0808, and lastly the 47mm set up east of the river at the bend at 0805. Turn 1: Zheleznnyakov enters board, 0717, 0716, ends in 0715, sees and shoots at the 37mm AT gun in 0712, missing. The 37mm AT gun shoots back with it's AT value of 2, hitting with a roll of 9. The vessel has an armor value of 0, so the 9 plus the AT value of 2 gives a step loss. There goes the Zheleznyakov. This is a short and fun little exercise in some rules that I probably wont get to use often, and makes a good solo target shoot game. |

One shot wonder |

Don't you hate it when you spend the time to find the pieces, set up the games and it is over before you even get a chance to make sure you have the SSRs in mind? The Soviet gunboat is trying to make it across the map to exit into the Sea of Azov. The scenario narrative give you the idea that the Romanian horsemen lined up along the riverbank and fired away wildly trying to cause the loss of the boat. It leaves out the fact that the Romanianas have three AT gun sections (two door knockers and a 47mm), which, against the "0" armor of the gunboat are more than adequate. The gunboat enters the board and I decide to try at a 5 range one of the door knockers. It is Opportunity Fire and I roll a "10". Scenario over. As the summary mentions this is probably best for solo play and a whole bunch of them at once since it is likely that the Elusive Zheleznyakov will prove less elusive than it actually was... |

Matt, is it possible you used the wrong counter for the monitor? The OOB lists it with an armor of "3", not "0".
The counter for the Zheleznyakov is a double sized counter included with Edelweiss. The counter in the database to date is the one included (I think) with the original Panzer Grenadier and is a generic gunboat (and is not double sided). The actual Zheleznyakov has a direct fire of 10-10 but an armor value of "0" leading to the result I had. It might be interesting to see what would have happened if the armor value was "3". I think it would have been a better scenario, but history was a "0".
I should note that the scenario conclusion indicates that the Zheleznyakov foundered upon its escape into the Sea of Azov, primarily due to damage resulting from this encouter so my result wasn't ahistorical, necessarily, merely not as exciting from a play perspective.
TheDoctor and I just played this, but prior to reading these comments. I do wonder now regarding a misprint on the counter. Note on the last paragraph of p.54 of the Edelweiss booklet: "They (the Zheleznyakov class) ... had far better protection than previous monitors, with 30mm of armor on the conning tower and turret ..." Since the previous monitors, the Udarnyi, has an armor rating of '0' then perhaps Hugmenot's suggestion of '3' for the Zheleznyakov has some validity.
Query to APL for clarification? An armor value of '3' certainly would increase (from asymptotically approaching zero) the likelihood of the printed assault rules being of some use.

The Romanians setup along the river bank, with the anti-tank guns in the front. The Romanian gunboat enters on the south edge and begins firing at the Romanian anti-tank guns. The direct fire is normally ineffective, but the Romanians eventually lose a step due to compound demoralization. The Romanians finally get lucky with their anti-tank fire and the game ends with the gunboat sinking to the bottom of the river. Result: Romanian Victory. Both sides lost one step. |

Even with good rolling on the DF 7-col (7 col; + 1 vs. AT; -1 for range) where the ROM 47mm was demoralized and killed after a failed morale recovery, and other rolls 2x5 and 1x10 and 1x11, the Romanians with their 8-morale and +1 morale bonus leaders simply held against the M and M1 checks (I did demoralize a 10-moraled LT) until the eventual 10+ AT roll by a 37mm AT gun. Were the Romanian morale 7/6 and had the monitor a '1' armor value this might be interesting. |
