Introduction |
---|
German military intelligence identified a weak link in the Polish Army's deployment, a hastily-raised division of reservist in the line alongside a reputedly tough unit of the regular army. The German 14th Army accordingly assigned only a small task force from 5th Panzer Division to assist in overcoming the reservists. But local ethnic Germans, organized by German agents for the occasion, were determined to help out as well. |
Conclusion |
---|
Picked out as a weak link, the 55th Reserve Division fought very well on the first day of the war, holding back the Germans much longer than anyone expected. But the could not be held forever, and by nightfall the division was retreating in good order away from the border - other, regular army units had given way much more easily |

The urge to use the "fifth column" as a combat unit MUST be resisted. Used as a spotter the Poles can be hammered in detail and any attempt to get at the fifth column troops will expose the Poles to even greater artillery fire. Then there is the fact that the fifth column is also a pretty good group of troops and can hold its own against the Poles for the amount of time necessary to get the regular Germans in place to help. The Polish artillery is too weak to make the Germans advance from cover to cover. Very tough for the Poles to win. |
