Introduction

With rapid advances by German units and the unexpected hostile intervention by the Soviet Union combining to shred the Polish defense plan, the Polish high command ordered its remaining troops to break out to Hungary, Romania and Lithuania. From there the soldiers were to make their way to France, and form an army in exile. Army Krakow collected all of its fuel to allow the Polish army's only true armored unit, bolstered for the occasion by a number of smaller independent tank detachments, to spearhead its attempt at the village of Tomaszow Lubelski.

Conclusion

The Poles had the best of the early fighting, but prompt reinforcements from 2nd Panzer turned the tide against them just as they seemed on the verge of success. With no other real choice, the Poles regrouped to try again.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable

Scenario WhEa028

This AAR consists of the Tweets I did of the scenario as I played it. Each Tweet had a picture and these were copied to my CSW blog. You can follow it starting here:

There may be breaks in the thread up to two weeks, keep scrolling until you find the next post on the scenario.

(Note that as these were tweets there is some brevity in the style.)

0630 the Germans aggressively push forward with their tanks as the Polish column enters and is forced to deploy early.

0645 The Poles continue to deploy and prepare to push the Germans who have taken up line with their tanks south of town.

0700 The Polish infantry take the town and this forces the German tanks back to avoid infantry assault.

0715 A Vickers destroys a Pz II step. Pole infantry move forward under ineffective German artillery. Panzers fall back.

0730 Polish infantry assaults destroying the Pz II platoon with ATR fire and disrupting a Pz I plt in the small woods.

0745 fighting continues in the small wood. Rest of Polish forces set up for the attack. Both sides fire to no effect.

0800 Poles destroy a Pz I plt, then press the attack forcing some panzers to fall back. German artillery has effect.

Germans make their reinforcement roll start of 0815. 2 Pz III plts and 3 Pz II plts from 2d Panzer Div come on west edge of the map.

0815 Fighting erupts across the entire line as the Poles press the attack. Some troops waver as German fire has effect.

0830 Poles push to try to break through between the east field & woods on Bd 10. Both sides display a terrible resolve.

0845 the Poles try to infiltrate on the west flank while pressing the attack on the east. Tank battle claims a Vickers.

0900 The Poles push the east flank killing a Pz II plt, the Germans fall back. The Pz III Co. defends the E-W road

0915 The attack continues though the woods, Pole inf kills a Pz I plt. Pz III Co. adjusts. Fog of War ends turn early.

0930 a lull in the east woods fighting as both sides adjust. Artillery hammers both sides and some troops waiver.

0930 Polish infantry push forward in the west woods but suffers from cannon and MG fire from a Pz II platoon.

0945 The Poles push to break through the German lines on the east edge. They face heavy fire from the Panzers.

1000 the Polish assault continues on the east flank. One TKS platoon breaches the line and makes a dash for the south.

1015 Fighting on east flank is intense. A PZ III step is lost & the Poles push through. The Germans adjust.

1030 The Poles, under artillery fire, push through to the south edge. One TKS platoon makes it off the edge.

1045 The Poles struggle to get through the breach under artillery and direct fire. An infantry platoon makes the escape.

1045 In the west woods the assaults continue to be fought with the Poles getting slowly whittled down.

1100 The Poles push another platoon off and are poised to exit more. A Vickers kills a Pz III. A Pz II plugs the gap.

1100 In the west not much action but some Polish troops flee. Fog of War ends the turn early after an artillery duel.

1115 A TKS plt escapes. Pole infantry on the edge suffers German tank & artillery fire. The Vickers plt is destroyed.

1115 in the west the Poles take infantry losses while a TKS platoon withdraws

1130 A Pole infantry platoon and leader escapes. The rest get pounded by artillery. Remaining Poles start to fall back.

1130 The Germans are winning the fight in the West woods. Polish cdr orders all troops not making it off to fall back.

1145 As German tanks hunt down the BN Cdr and a HMG section, the last infantry to try for board edge rallies.

1145 In the west the Polish troops fall back to the perimeter while the last of the woods fighting continues

1200 1 more inf step and ldr escapes. Even if the Germans winning the last assaults they will decisively lose the game.

The scenario is over. A decisive victory for the Polish troops at 51 to 17 points.

This was a good scenario and was pretty intense throughout. I thought the Poles had a tough row to hoe, especially with the German tank reinforcements coming in right away. But they managed to prevail by playing very aggressive, moving fast and assaulting only when a key position had to be taken.

I thought the German Panzer line would be a tough one to break, but the Poles manages to crack it near the board edge and swarm past it.

The west flank fight was no too exciting but important as the Poles tied down many German troops on that flank.

I recommend this scenario. 1200 1 more inf step and ldr escapes. Even if the Germans winning the last assaults they will decisively lose the game.

Scenario WhEa028

Second foray into White Eagles was #28, Tank Battle. I chose it because (a) it had some Polish armor, and (2) it only required Eastern Front material, plus one Bulge map. At least according to the scenario it did, but I discovered that one map (#17) is actually from Road to Berlin, which I don’t have. So I faked it, using EF board #5 with dimes as town hexes and pennies to delineate borders of the woods. It worked well enough..,

The Poles led with their Vickers B tanks, the TKS tankettes following (staying out of the way of the German armor when it advanced.) As the armored clash progressed - ultimately costing the Poles 3 of 4 Vickers steps and the Germans 4 Panzer II and one Panzer III step (the other becoming demoralized and out of the fight for about 6-7 turns) - the Polish personnel units spread out under cover of woods, then began inching out. They also attempted to add their ATG to the tank battle, but it was wiped out by artillery.

As the Poles advanced, the TKS platoons closed to the edge of town (out of LOS of the German ATG’s) and began blasting away at German infantry to little effect. On the west, infantry advanced through the light woods, challenged by the Panzer I’s; on the east, artillery interfered somewhat with the Polish advance, but other units locked a German ATG into a surprisingly lengthy assault.

Because of the initial Polish armor losses and some minor German successes elsewhere, it wasn’t until Turn 18 that the Germans were able to start rolling for their armor reinforcements, as it wasn’t until the end of Turn 17 that the Poles achieved the requisite 5-VP edge. The new tanks entered on Turn 20. Although the surviving Vickers dropped a step of the new arrivals, it was eliminated by a different platoon. Most of the remaining Polish units switched to exit mode at this point; half of the TKS tankettes escaped and half were wiped out by the new armor.

The Poles were spread out enough that ultimately 16 steps of INF/HMG (plus several leaders) were able to exit south, a whopping 48 VP. Almost none were left on the board: a tiny remnant of an extended city fight, plus the mortar and a surplus of empty trucks on the northern board. Without the exits the game would have been a draw, with only 1 more German VP than Polish in the losses; but the exits made it a major Polish victory.

Scenario WhEa028

A quick glance at the VC and the OOBs for the scenario very quickly sowed the seeds of doubt about this scenario, very simply to win score 5 more VP's than your opponent, a little twist is that should the Poles get 5 VP's ahead the Germans get a chance of more tank reinforcements. Poles get vps for exiting the board as well. The issue is that the Germans have 3 x 16 OBDA and once the Poles come out of cover they will be subjected to heavy bombardment. As a gamer I always look of not to lose a game and a quick way for the Polish player to lose is make a dash for the edge of the board. So I thought I would try and ease my way round the German defenses, Bangla has set his A/T guns in the centre so I opted to move the Poles on either flanks, however Bangla being the canny play covered one flank with his PzIII and move INF to the other, he also pushed leaders forward to direct OBDA. The initial exchanges where equal but I noted that each 42 Bombardment resulted in a step loss for the pluck Poles. By GT10 the VP score was Germans 4 Pols 2 and I decided to withdraw back to the woods and see if Bangla wanted to advance. He did not wish to advance and after 6 more turns we called it a draw. **Hopeless scenario really, no doubt there is a chance for both sides to win but it calls for poor play or set up for this to happen IMHO **
