Introduction |
---|
On the right flank of the German Third Army striking southward out of East Prussia, the German 1st Cavalry Brigade attacked the Polish Mazowiecka Cavalry Brigade along the Ulatkowka River. The September Campaign is best remembered today as the birthplace of blitzkrieg, but a large-scale clash of cavalry was among its very first battles. |
Conclusion |
---|
A few mounted clashes actually occurred on this front, and the Polish horsemen held their sector against the German cavalry's attack. Thrown back across the river, the Germans re-grouped to try again, but the next day the Poles had withdrawn thanks to increasing gains made by the German 12th Infantry Division just to the west. |

Cavalerie |
---|

A brutal little fight | ||||||||||||

Since this was a solo affair I semi-scripted the opening setup and moves. The Poles set up the mortar on the eastern bd 21 hill, covered by 2 TKS platoons. The HMG and Chor set up directly on the bridge. I set the heavier gun up in the southernmost woods. The Cavalry were bunched up in the western woods on bd 21. The idea was that the Germans would cross the river and push through the tank/support artillery. The Cav tucked away in the woods were in effect hidden; not to reveal their presence until the time was right. The Germans were tasked with clearing the north-south road and neutralizing the supporting guns. Any Cavalry that appeared would be dealt with. After the first two - three hours the Germans were spread out along the road. That's when the Polish Cavalry advanced onto the battlefield. Things heated up quickly as both side's Cavalry began to close in and begin firing, charging, and going to close assaults. German morale was low, costing them numerous DIS and DEM results. However, backed by powerful OBA and two 81 Mortars, the Germans finally got the upper hand over their nnumerically smaller opponents. I called the game with at least an hour and a half to go. The Poles came out of this fighting with one platoon and two half-platoons of Cavalry remaining. While the Germans took losses too, they retained enough good order units capable of completing their mission. For being a Cavalry slugfest I give this one a 4. |

It's the Artillery what won it | ||||||||||||

This scenario is a cavalry v cavalry battle on the first day of WWII. German cavalry advance against their Polish counterparts, the Poles have better inherent firepower, better morale and even some tankettes in support, the Germans have ENG, HMG but also have very good OBDA. The German force seep forward and have little difficulty in seizing the bridge on board 3, accurate artillery is forcing the Polish horseman to seek cover in woods and towns, by halfway through the scenario Polish forces have been pushed back to the southern towns which need top be held, up to this point losses had been fairly even but now the Poles have to stand and fight. The next 2 hours of game time are spent in urban fighting as the the Germans slowly clear the towns, Polish losses are slowly mounting while German losses are relativity light in this stage of the battle. German numbers mean that DEM units are pulled out of the assault's in time to recover while the Poles do not have this ability, and when forced out of positions they are bombarded by German Mortars and artillery. By game end some town hexes remain in Polish hands but the majority are cleared and the main North South road is also clear of Polish units. A major German victory. *Not a bad scenario, however a competent German player should be able to muscle his way to a win. * |
