Introduction

With the "Red Rising" under way in Vienna, Schutzbund groups attempted to seize key locations in the provinces as well. The industrial works at Steyr included most of Austria's domestic arms industry, a key point if ever there was one. Regular army troops garrisoned the town. Red militia headed out from Linz to take it from them, while "Black" (right-wing Heimwehr) militia set out from Vienna to reinforce the army soldiers.

Conclusion

After savage fighting, the Reds had almost taken the works and town when a column of trucks from Vienna pulled up bearing Heimwehr troopers led by their chief, Prince Ernst RĂ¼diger von Starhemberg himself. With their strength renewed, the government forces and their allies ejected the Socialists. Linz itself would come back under government control a few hours later.

Additional Notes

Socialist Schutzbund troops are represented by RKKA units from Eastern Front Deluxe. Austrian Army counters are on the back of the Tank Battles book. I suggest using Hopeless, But Not Serious counters because I do not like to cut up my books. Making counters from a good color copy is also an option.

If Hopeless, But Not Serious counters are not available, Avalanche Press still hosts DYI Austrian leader counters for download.

Scenario TaBa007

Since this was the original from Tank Battles (published before HBNS) I chose to play the re-written HBNS scenario (at 16 turns) and then continue on to the full 22 turn sceanrio listed in Tank Battles.

At the end of 'regulation play' in HBNS scenario 1, we found the Austrian Schutzbund reeling from massive casualties and rampant desertion in the Officer Corps. The remaining Officers were faced with a daunting challenge of rallying their (mostly) demoralized troops in the face of an Austrian Federal counter attack.

Upon arrival of the Austrian Heimwehr, who took up the positions of the Federals, the Federals went over on to the offensive and completed the rout of the Schutzbund. As the scenario conclusion states, the town of Linz was secured several hours after the attack at the Steyr works was defeated. Many more Schutzbund steps were lost as successive stretches of woods were cleared by the advancing Federals. The Schutzbund were compelled to retreat time and time again, unable to rally or form any sense of a cohesive defensive front. As the end of turn 22, all that remained was a panic stricken mob; fewer than half of the original force returned.
