Introduction |
---|
Under the cover of darkness, the invasion of the West Bank began with an attempt to gobble up the high ground overlooking the Old Jerusalem Highway. The Jordanians felt secure behind their wire and minefields, and their attention was diverted toward the attacks earlier in the day near Jerusalem and in the Sinai. In 1948, the Arabs had successfully driven off Israeli attacks from this direction resulting in the West Bank occupation. Why would it not be the same this time? |
Conclusion |
---|
The Israeli engineers breached the Jordanian minefields and wire quickly under cover of darkness. Thereafter, rather than assault straight ahead, the Israelis drove around the Jordanian position (hidden from view by darkness and hilly terrain), and assaulted them from the rear supported by a heavy bombardment and assisted by powerful searchlights illuinating the police station and monastery for the assaults. The dislocation caused by darkness and surprise, along with the rapid advance down the line of fortified positions led to a rather quick victory. |

(Note: this was played with the 2022 edition and the scenario is now number 32 instead of 33. If the new edition s entered, I'll switch the report to the new edition.) This is an excellent scenario which turned out to be very tough for the Israelis to win. The Jordanian/Egyptian force deafening with the mines n a half moon around the monastery and police station. the Egyptian commandos defended the ton hexes in the read and the Monastery. The Israelis came around the southern flanks and went after the Monastery and the two towns first. the Jordanians immediately sent in their reserve mechanized infantry force which, although they got wiped out, caused a severe delay in the Israeli advance. using the searchlights on the tanks, the Israelis managed to reduce this first line of defense on and take the Monastery and one town. But getting to the Police Station proved difficult and alate game assault finally took the position, but the Israelis suffered five steps of losses and could not reach the Arab casualty level needed for a win. The Arabs take this as time ran out and daylight arrived forcing the Israeli vehicles to pull back. A key to the Arab defense is where to put the deadly anticraft guns which can hammer the Israeli tanks and thus prevents them from using their searchlight unless they can get a position from which LOS to the guns is blocked. |
