Introduction |
---|
Panzer Grenadier Division Viking spearheaded the German 57th Panzer Corps' drive on Mozdok, a key city in the oil-rich northern Caucasus. The advance stalled on a key ridge line near the town of Malgabek, and the Soviet units dug in there beat back repeated attacks by the SS men. Finally the division command sent in their toughest unit, their battalion of Finnish mercenaries. |
Conclusion |
---|
A daring frontal assault, backed by tanks and artillery, finally broke the Soviet lines and opened the way to Malgobek. The Finns suffered heavy casualties, and later apologist writers would laud their battle-mad courage. The details of this action are somewhat obscure; while combat definitely took place on the ridge, the afternoon attack is not well documented in Soviet accounts (usually a sign of a signal German success). |

The Finns had a strong force attacking a substantial, but not by any means in depth Soviet defense. The Finns concentrated on their left, and managed to take the Soviet right flank. The Soviet mortars and OBA however, held up a third of the Finnish infantry. Most of the SS officers didn’t prove to be worth while in recovery or morale checks. The German armor took to their right, attempting to flank the Soviet line after they shifted towards the Finnish attack. The Soviets did manage to pull the remnants of their right back and reformed a line and even counterattacked. The result was a scrum where the Soviets came out badly, but were still able to hold the Finns to a draw. |
