Introduction |
---|
The Germans were moving to cut off the Soviet 42nd Army. The right side of the pincer consisted of the 96th and 121st Infantry Divisions. The left consisted of the Police Division and 169th Infantry Division. After capturing Krasnogvardeisk on the 13th the Germans ran into the Slutsk-Kolpino Fortified Zone. Here they would try to close the pincers on the 42nd Army. |
Conclusion |
---|
In the fighting of the 14th the Germans were unable to penetrate the Soviet lines. The Police thought the bunker they overran contained the body of General Ivanov (the former 42nd Army commander) and his Kommissar, but this turned out to be false. In three days of fighting the Germans made only minimal gains and finally called off the attacks. General Ivanov would turn out to be the last casualty of the battle when in February he was stripped of power and charged with dereliction of duty. |
