Introduction |
---|
On the outskirts of Ordzhonikdize, an important crossroads and industrial center in the Caucasus, the Soviet 11th Guards Infantry Corps dug in with orders to defend the city to the last. The corps commander, Maj. Gen. I.P. Rosly, put the hard-fighting NKVD 26th Frontier Regiment in front of the main line. After resisting the Germans for four days, some of the NKVD troopers saw the end coming soon. In one bunker, four men running short of ammunition decided to festoon themselves with anti-tank mines and sprint forward to each take a German tank to oblivion with them. However, wrote one of the four, Party organizer Georgi Mikheyev, "Sergeant Altunin said that it was a bitter thought for him to die and not be a member of the Party, and asked Kuriyanov and me to admit him to Party membership....'We are not empowered to accept you to membership by a vote of two,' I told him, 'but the Party will forgive this violation of the rules.'" |
Conclusion |
---|
The new party member and his comrades fought off repeated attacks, as did the rest of the regiment. The German advance had reached it high-water mark. Altunin's membership (which brought with it death benefits for his family and a state-sponsored funeral) was approved by the 3rd Battalion's Party Committee. "We may perish," Mikheyev told Altunin, "but even a dead communist inspires fear in the enemy. In that lies the greatness of our Party. Let the enemy shudder when he reads this document glorifying our Party not by fanaticism, but by trust in Lenin's cause." |
