Introduction |
---|
River lines have provided sound defensive barriers since the days of the Sumerians; during the Second World War they continued to stop even mechanized offensives in their tracks. New technology promised to allow armies to practice "vertical envelopment," moving their forces quickly and precisely by air without the confusion of a parachute drop. |
Conclusion |
---|
Airmobile operations completely changed the nature of tactical combat in the 1960's, making the concept of "front lines" extremely fluid. But the helicopter had its limitations, particularly in the face of small-caliber anti-aircraft artillery. |

Secret Weapons #1 - Flight of the Valkyries |
---|
This first scenario is a large 8 mapper matching up a German airmobile force against elements of a Soviet Guards motorized rifle division for control of the various towns on six maps, as well as the two bridges over the major river, step losses and keeping the Germans from deploying in strength on the east side of the river, round out the VCs. The Soviets are spread thin trying to cover all of the towns but they do have one advantage, all their infantry are AK platoons with a DF of 10 and are backed up by a mobile reserve of two T34/85 tank companies. The Germans used their lift capacity to attack each Soviet strong point with over whelming force, then used their attack helicopters, X7 ATGMs and towed ATGs to take on the Soviet tank reserve. Unfortunately for the Soviets they did not have enough reserves to stop the Germans. |
