Introduction

Ritter von Trapp slammed the receiver down on the black phone labelled "Pola." The phone had appeared brand new and untouched a week ago and now looked as if it had been dragged through a rockpile. Trapp had just been ordered to attack Belgrade and to show the Serbs that a cowardly attack on Austria-Hungary would be met with force and destruction even though the forces at hand were primarily customs duty boats with upgraded guns. Not only were the units unsuited to the task but the two best boats were still being repaired from their recent action near Belegis. Orders were, however, orders and Trapp made it clear: "They will never catch me dodging a tough assignment." Men on the two older classes of gunboats wondered if he might have been a little more willing to dodge.

Conclusion

Each flotilla brought some of their best guns on some of their most fragile platforms. As in the salt water navies of the world, gunboats were built in named classes. This permitted the shipyards to work on several boats at once with the same equipment and parts. As in the salt water commands, action was often conducted by multi-boat forces comprised of units from the same named class. It also meant that if one unit of the class had a weakness all of the boats in that class had the same weakness. Despite the severe cost of the attack, the command at Pola was satisfied that honor had been retained as shells had been thrown into Belgrade. Trapp's report on the action included the statement "It escapes me what purpose was achieved by this demonstration except to terrorize a population that until the middle of last month would flock to the waterfront to cheer as we came by. While I am sure that the newspapers will label this otherwise, terrorism by any name is repugnant." Naval command at Pola was not amused. However when word of Trapp's sudden spinal toughening reached the men in his command morale improved immediately.

  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).

The Serbs set up their fleet near the city of Belgrade, while positioning one 76mm battery on the far shore while the other two protected Belgrade. The Serbs had the initial advantage as their boats were all anchored, but the AH have the better monitors and made quick work of the Serb fleet. The Serb shore batteries were effective against the AH gunboats, but the OBA was not. Nothing the Serbs could do was able to stop the AH from burning Belgrade.
