| Introduction |
|---|
|
The Japanese still held half of San Manuel when their dogged defense fell apart. It's not clear exactly what sparked the change in outlook, but Isao Shigemi killed himself and his remaining tanks and infantry launched a determined night attack. Some later writes called this a panicked breakout, but the Americans had halted and the Japanese had a clear retreat route as long as they abandoned their tanks. They would first inflict damage on the Americans before they pulled away. |
| Conclusion |
|---|
|
The Japanese came at the Americans in three waves of tanks and infantry; ten of the 13 Japanese tanks involved were knocked out. About one-third of Shigemi's men (400 troops) escaped to the east; the remainder were lost as well as all of the detachment's armor, vehicles, and heavy weapons. It had been an unnecessary battle for both sides; Shigemi had allowed himself to be boxed in at a place that could not possibly help the Japanese cause if held. And since he was already boxed in, the Americans had no need to assault him there. |
| Additional Notes |
|---|
|
The Japanese player will need additional Shinhoto tanks from Pacific Armor. The American player will need additional INF, ENG, and M4 Shermans from Leyte '44, and the 37mm AT and the 4.2in mortar from Pacific Armor |

Pacific Armor, scenario #7: The Empire Strikes Back Depending on the source General Isao Shigemi died a by suicide or in assaulting American units, either way I needed to try Mike’s victory conditions and setup on my scenario, The Japanese stared with the Americans right on top of them and it’s a night scenario and I rolled it was only a one hex visibility rules 8.12. At first the Americans suffer a lot of casualties and things don’t looks so bad for the Japanese but since they really can’t exit steps until turn 17 to get exit points the Japanese have to holdout and try their exit chances but in the meantime the American close their ring around the Japanese with the larger numbers and inflict a ton of casualties on them and even take control of Hex 0713 for a total American Major Victory. The few Japanese that were left had no chance to escape. Maybe someone else can to do better as the Japanese in this one. In the Battle Game for San Manuel, the Japanese had two minor victories and one major victory, while the Americans had three minor victories and one major victory but according the point needed for the Americans, the Japanese won the Battle Game for the San Manuel series of scenarios. |
