| Introduction |
|---|
|
The Japanese had dug in along Highway 1D, a dirt track heading northwest out of Davao and into the interior of Mindanao. The American 24th Infantry Division staff hatched a plan to unhinge those defenses by capturing the hilly ground just to the west. That might be enough to provoke a general retreat by the Japanese, who could then be contained in some out-of-the-way wilderness and left until the end of the war. |
| Conclusion |
|---|
|
The 21st Infantry attempted a pincer attack east of the Talomo river near Mintal, but the Japanese poured down a rain of artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire. The Americans recoiled and would try again a few days later as part of a general offensive. |

Mindanao 1945, scenario #9: Balked at Mintal I thought this one might be a cakewalk for the Americans on paper but it was anything but! First the Americans conquered all the 60-meter hill hexes on entering the southern edge of the map but this took a long time to dug-out dug-in Japanese Infantry, more time than I thought and the minefields took a heavy toll on American casualties. Once this was achieved the Americans raced forward to the north to fight another group of Japanese that had entrenchment with a 75mm gun and Infantry in it, not to mention dug-n Japanese Infantry & HMGs. When the dust settled after 16 turns, the entrenchment was still contested and the Americans actually had the same casualty level as the Japanese and achieving only one victory objective, the Japanese win a Minor Victory but a fun scenario to play. |
