Introduction

Surprised by the fast-moving American 124th Infantry and 149th Field Artillery moving north of Pulangi on the Sayre Highway, elements of the Japanese 1st Battalion, 74th Infantry moving south on the same highway ran head-on into the Americans in the tropical darkness. A confused, close-range fight broke out, with neither side sure of who or what they had encountered,

Conclusion

After the opposing units collided, gunners of the 149th Field Artillery hurriedly unlimbered their 105mm howitzers and opened fire while the Japanese still had not fully reacted to the shock of finding enemies where they should not have been. The Japanese battalion scattered, leaving 50 dead behind but taking their wounded (and possibly more dead men) with them.

Additional Notes

The American I&R, 105mm, and truck come from Leyte '44.

Scenario MIND006

Mindanao 1945, scenario #6: Collision on The Sayre Highway

Because it was night, in tough terrain, with only 18 turns, the Americans are well pressured to achieve their three goals. But in the end could only achieve one out of three, giving the Japanese a minor victory. The one they achieved was casualties, as the Japanese had 5 step losses to the American 1 step loss. This was a fast playing scenario with a low unit count, one map and 18 turn but is a grind for the Americans. The Japanese can easily deny two of the American objectives. The scenario special rules make it somewhat interesting, as neither side can do any firing or get off the road until they run into each other.
