Introduction

Just before dawn, North Korean troops and tanks crossed the Naktong using an underwater bridge and began infiltrating between American positions on and around Hill 303, a height that overlooked a pair of damaged bridges across the river. Some of the 1st Cavalry troops pulled out when they spotted the North Koreans, leaving neighboring units to be surrounded.

Conclusion

Repeated attempts to relieve the trapped cavalrymen failed, as the troopers proved unable to make their way through heavy North Korean fire. Finally the American regimental commander fired the battalion commander on the scene, and his replacement led a successful effort to break through the North Korean siege lines and the isolated troops could withdraw.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable

Korean War: Counter-Attack, scenario #23: Surrounded on Hill 303

An interesting scenario where the initial American force which is G Company and H Mortar Company for victory conditions, setup first followed by the North Koreans, which setup second within 3-5 hexes of the Americans in a blocking positions but also with some attention to where the American reinforcements will enter the map from the east edge. The NKPA also setup two underwater bridges in any river hex but this was from the original map design configuration but still they work and make sense in this scenario as the NKPA entered from those to begin with, so they would still be there and now the American might be able to use them.

The situation almost reminds me of a modern day Caesar, Epic Battle of Alesia type battle. The North Koreans have the Americans pretty well surrounded and both sides trade some shots and some of the NKPA forces pull east and dug-in around the bridges to cover the American Reinforcements from B Company and Armor reported to be approaching. The Americans decide to wait out their reinforcements to try and breakout of their siege.

On turn eight the American reinforcements enter the map but the initial American forces don’t try to breakout until about turn 12, hoping the reinforcements might take some pressure off of them. The North Korean setup up a deadly cross-fire for the eastern approaching American M26 armor and the NKPA 45mm AT gun even rolled a 12 on the dice besides the dug-in T34/85s. Needless to say, the Pershing tanks are burning after crossing the north-south river. The Americans manage a little revenge by knocking out a step of North Korean T34/85s with an assaulting Sergeant and 3.5in Bazooka Team. By the end of the scenario, the map looked like a total melee with units trying to break out of the NKPA encirclement and units trying to open a hole inside of it. The American were not able to break out any or the original G and H Companies but destroyed five NKPA steps but lost ten of their own in a very crazy but action filled battle. The results were a NKPA minor victory by one point.
