Introduction |
---|
For days the Soviets thwarted all German efforts to secure Berezovka or drive them from the large horseshoe bend of the Pena River. Eventually corps headquarters understood that 3rd Panzer Division lacked the strength to finish the job, so they ordered up Grossdeutschland to join them in eliminating the problem area once and for all. |
Conclusion |
---|
XLVII Panzer Corps had identified the boundary between the Soviet 6th Tank and 3rd Mechanized Corps the night before. This knowledge allowed the recon battalion to isolate the 200th Tank Brigade, which the main body of Grossdeutschland then quickly overran. The Soviet commander, General A.L. Getman, responded poorly by sending the rest of his 6th Tank Corps into the battle in piecemeal fashion. The Germans responded in turn by pocketing and virtually destroying the Soviet armor at little cost to themselves. Hill 247 fell to the Germans but the village of Kruglik remained in Soviet hands. Stalin Organs firing their rockets off special ramps (common at Kursk) used direct fire against the advancing assault guns around Kruglik. Besides tearing up the countryside, one hit set off a smoke candle, bathing the field in a grey cloud but causing no other damage. |

Turn 1-4. The Germans push forward and then to the right. The Germans get the 88 battery set up on a hill. The Germans are hit with desultory fire. Nothing significant., Turn 5-12. The Germans force the issue and charge Hard in to the Soviet right flank. The Germans take the town and roll up the units between the town and the ridge to their left. Russian reinforcements enter on turn 8. The Germans reorganize for an attack to the ridge in the center and the Soviets SS to meet them. Turn 13-22. A mass of disruption, demoralization and destruction ensues in the center. Units are lost whole as the Germans push in to the Soviet left flank on the ridge. Soviet artillery fires point blank and armor duels and assaults are close range as well. Both sides suffer heavy losses. In the end, a German victory, 125 VP to 112 VP. This will be one to visit again most assuredly. |
