Introduction |
---|
The AK-47 assault rifle took nearly a decade to enter wide-spread use, though like most weapon systems it likely could have been made available sooner had events demanded quicker development. The American M1 Garand was a fine rifle for its time, but Mikhail Kalashnikov made it obsolete after a very short period; 60 years later his invention is the most common firearm on a planet awash in weaponry. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Americans knew of the Kalashnikov by the mid-1950s, but the Soviets maintained heavy security about the weapon and even after it had been issued to satellite armies in the 1960s, the U.S. underestimated its enormous combat power. When stories spread of American soldiers in Vietnam throwing away their M14 rifles and buying AR-15 automatic weapons with their own funds, the U.S. Army finally issued the M16 in response. |

June 1950 cold war with AK-47 infantry, I had to play this scenario. One map and a smaller size counter count with an interesting mix of Infantry types & small amounts of off-board artillery. Only twenty turns so a pretty quick play as well. Victory points for eliminated steps, town & entrenchment controlled. Night time turns with only two hex visibility. The Americans had to setup kind of thin to keep control of 8 town hexes and three entrenchments and the Soviet come on the map from the South under the cover of darkness. Well the Soviets were able to bunch up out of site and bring the hammer down on the Southern town & entrenchments and all pretty fast in terms of PG assault combat. Those AK-47 Infantry units mixed with Engineer Infantry & high morale Leaders really can put a hurt in assault combat hexes which this game turns into very quickly. The Americans need to reinforce with units holding the Northern town but waited to long and the Soviets had the advantage to close to enemy hexes on the cover of the night, so this one turned into a Major Soviet Victory, but I enjoyed the play regardless of the outcome. |

This was a Face to face scenario vs Greg Celentano. He played the Soviets. The U.S. had to set up spread out to cover both villages because the Soviet entry was anywhere on the south or East edge. The Soviets entered on the north end of the east edge while at the same time threating the center village. This kept the Americans from reenforcing the other village to any great extent. The Soviets took just one step loss while closing with the American positions in the village. Even though the Soviets had no leaders that gave a combat modifier they could still get 30 firepower factors on just about every direct fire shot. After a while this took it's toll as the Americans lost steps to double demorilazations and direct step losses. Eventually the Soviets got in position for assaults. With 30 factors in each attack the Americans were soon overwhelmed. This was a nice little scenario. The Americans could have done better. Their inital set up was flawed as it anticipated a different entry point than what the Soviets actually did. Had the U.S. been able to bleed the Soviets a little before they closed the U.S. may have had a chance to hold out. |

Setup: The Americans abandon the northern town and place all three entrenchments in the town in the middle of the board. They fill the entire town with three units in each hex, with their best units and leaders in the entrenchments. Play: The Soviets move quickly to assault the town, while sending one AK north to capture the northern town. The Soviets assault in two waves to dislodge the Americans. The first wave suffers miserably under American fire, but the second wave captures three of the town hexes, and two of the entrenchments. The Americans hold out in the last town hex until the end of the game. Result: Soviet Major Victory. The Victory Point Count stands at 22-60, with the Soviets having a thirty eight point lead. |
