Introduction |
---|
Since World War II, the U.S. Army has depended on fast cavalry regiments for a variety of screening tasks. In later years these would rely heavily on helicopters, but in the 1940s and 1950s, tanks and armored personnel carriers had to suffice. On the southern front, the United States had much lighter forces in Austria than in Germany, and would have looked to the crack 2nd Cavalry to carry out any advance. |
Conclusion |
---|
The 13th Guards, famous for their heroic struggle at Stalingrad, carried a reputation as one of the Red Army's best units and remained in the Group of Southern Forces in Hungary until 1989. In later years, Soviet planners would foresee overrunning all of eastern Austria to secure the southern flank of their advance into Germany and interrupt communications between Germany and Italy. But all foreign troops left peacefully in 1955, and Austria would not become an unwilling battlefield after all. |

June 1948: the American 2nd Armored Cavalry squares off against the Russian Poltava Tank Division. The Americans, not wanting to get cooped up on just one third of the battlefield, decide to make good use of their superior speed, and move eastward. However they overstretch and quickly they find themselves in a pickle. Naively the American M24’s engage the T44’s in an AT firefight. Bad idea! Straightaway they know they made a terrible mistake! Within minutes, half of the American tank units are reduced to burning hulks, with not a mark on the superior Russian tanks. Demoralized, the Americans know that the battle is over and they decide to skedaddle to safety and to take some extra tank tactics seminars. |

Setup: Neither the Soviets or Americans begins on the map, therefore neither side begins setup. Play: The Soviets scramble onto the map and take up defensive positions within the towns on Boards 20 and 17, forcing the Americans to waste precious time advancing all the way across the map. Once the Americans reach the Soviet perimeter, two of the M39's are destroyed by the gunboats. The Americans quickly retaliate by sinking the two Soviet gunboats while approaching the Soviet lines in the north. The Americans send a smaller force south to capture an abandoned two hex town, and to prevent and counterattacks by the Soviets against the main American force. The Americans waste no time in assaulting the northern town, but are slowly ground down by the Soviet SMG's and T-44's in the town. After about four turns of continuous assaults, the Americans gain a foothold and the Soviet defense collapses. The Soviets attempt an counterattack from the south, but the southern American force intercepts them, and repulses them. The American's northern force begins to recover and swings the their good order forces south, but the game ends before the Americans are able to launch an attack against the Soviet positions in the South. Result: American Major Victory. The Victory Point Count stands at 42-68, with the Americans having a 16 point lead. |
