When Britain pulled out of India in 1947, giving way to independent India and Pakistan, 565 semi-independent "princely states" had to choose their future course. The largest, Hyderabad, refused entry to the new Indian Union as its ruler, the Nizam Osman Khan, desired either independence or union with Pakistan. India's new rulers, particularly Deputy Prime Minister Sardar Patel (the "Iron Man of India") would not tolerate such a large Muslim state wholly within Indian territory, and ordered the Indian Army to conquer Hyderabad. After months of tension, the invasion jumped off on 13 September 1948. Hyderabad mustered 22,000 regular troops and about 200,000 Razakar militia. The Hyderabadis fought hard, but India's superior numbers and weaponry made the difference. The Nizam surrendered on the 17th, and signed the Instrument of Accession joining Hyderabad to India. Indian Unity is a supplement for the Panzer Grenadier system based on the actual battles that took place between India and Hyderabad in September 1948. |
