Introduction

Wroclaw (known as Breslau to the Germans) is a fairly defensible city. The Oder River runs through it, branching off into several parallels rivers and a large wetland to the north. This makes the city only really approachable from the west and south, and to the west is an Oder tributary called the Bystrzyca River which, though fordable, would offer another obstacle to defend.

Conclusion

To hold Wroclaw requires the Poles to hold the line here. A strong penetration by General Babadzhanian’s forces will likely lead to the investment of Wroclaw and its downfall. And if Wroclaw falls, the Soviets have the option of rolling north to take Poznan or driving straight for Warsaw through Lodz. General Sulik, Commander of the Silesian Military District, certainly has some tough choices to make.
