Introduction
When the Soviet attack started, the 54th Regiment's 1st Battalion was guarding the regiment's flank and rear. The battalion was ordered to regroup and move forward in the late morning hours (some would say too late). The flanks of the Italian counterattack were guarded by units of the Savoia cavalry regiment (Colonna Conforti) and by a battalion of the Tagliamento Legion.
Conclusion
It took until 1600 hours for the attack to begin - the battalion commander reported that his units could not move earlier because of the continuous flow of panicking survivors from the 2nd battalion. The attack's objective of driving the Soviets back to the Don River was too ambitious given the weak forces involved. In the event, the advance stalled in front of Hill 142 (about two kilometers from the Don) due to enemy artillery fire.
