Introduction

The commanders of German XVII Corps (to which Celere Division had been temporarily attached) decided to evict Soviet forces from the entire Serafimovich area up to the Don River. The large woods close to the villages of Bobrovski and Baskovsky was the last portion of the former bridgehead still in Soviet hands. The terrain was very treacherous (woods intermingled with marsh), and more importantly, the Soviets knew better. Under protest from Celere's high-ranking officers, the Bersaglieri were ordered to move forward.

Conclusion

After long and harsh fighting against an elusive enemy, the Italians and Germans reached the banks of the Don River at a few points, but they could not gain complete control of the woods. The following night, Soviet assault teams infiltrated Axis positions and forced them to withdraw. Celere's command staff had been right; the action was futile.
