Introduction

During the latter part of September, the 52nd "Torino" Division had gradually been transfered into the Kamenka bridgehead, which had been concurred at the beginning of the month by the SS "Viking" Division. In the early hours of the 28th the order came to start a new attack. Torino was to act as the right pincer of the Italian encirclement of Petrikovka, with 81st Regiment marching directly on the town. On the first day, Torino met elements of the Soviet 261st Rifle Division, entrenched just outside Kamenka.

Conclusion

it took approximately two hours to break through the main Soviet defensive positions. As the Italians moved forward they met delaying forces entrenched on farms, and came under fire from troops on a prominent hill (Mogila Tolstaia). The latter position was taken out by heavy artillery fire. Afterwards, the regiment split into two columns, one of which proceeded on foot through a swamp area. The Italians gradually ground down the Soviets and finally conquered a village halfway to Petrikovka.

Scenario FrRu005

The main Italian objective is the large town on map 2 but they have to get though the Soviet entrenchments first, while keeping their casualties to a minimum, less than 16 steps, luckily for the CSIR the Soviet defensive forces are spread out over two maps with the only reinforcements being an infantry company on turn 22.

The CSIR concentrated their forces on map 15, eventually over running the Soviet right flank after heavy fighting. The remaining Soviets troops tried to disengage so they could set up a new blocking position, but the Italians were hot on their heels.

Scenario turn length (44), which allowed the Italian artillery to soften up the Soviet defenses and the timely arrival of CSIR reinforcements to secure the minor VCs and hold the Soviet forces on map 5, aided in the Italian victory.
