In May 1940, the French Anny enjoyed the world's highest military reputation. Vanquishers of the Kaiser in 1918, the French boasted marked advantages over the Germans in both numbers and quality of their tanks and aircraft, in numbers of artillery pieces, and they stood behind the mighty fortifications of the Maginot Line. Six weeks later it was all over. German panzer spearheads shattered the French defenses, and France requested an armistice. Many French units fought tenaciously for their country, with all the legendary courage of their forebears, but it was not enough to save France from Nazi tyranny. |
