Fall of France 1 Base Game
Introduction

Through the French counterattack the previous day had driven Grossdeutschland from the village, troops and a few tanks from 10th Panzer Division remained there. General Flavigny (commanding the 21st Army Corps) felt he had no choice but to launch a massive counterattack to eliminate the German threat and secure the village. At 0505 hours on the 16th, French artillery began pounding what was left of the village as French tanks advanced again across the plateau.

Conclusion

Commandant Malaguti (commanding 41st Batallion de Chars de Combat) drove his B1-bis tanks right into the smoking ruins of the village, destroyed a panzer and then sprayed some German infantrymen with machinegun fire. By 0555 the southern edge of Stonne had been cleared, but the Germans still held the woods near the town. Meanwhile Captain Billotte (in another B1-bis), entered the main street of the village from the west found himself head-to-head with a long column of German tanks. Billotte drove his tank down the German column and calmly destroyed 13 enemy tanks and several antitank weapons. By the end of the battle, Billotte's tank had taken 140 hits but suffered no appreciable damage. The Germans fled, and by 0700 Stonne was French again.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable

Los franceses contraatacan en Stonne

Scenario FaoF023

Scenario FaoF023

This looked like an interesting matchup, so went ahead and played this scenario. At first I thought it would be difficult for the French to take the two town hexes of Stonne, with German units in it and around it, on a 40 meter hill to boot, not to mention the German Infantry units are stronger then the French but the French approached in the dark the first couple of turns, they have a more then two to one advantage in Infantry, a nice dose of off-board artillery and those huge B1bis tanks.

The Germans did bring on some armor reinforcements of their own, which arrived on turn #4 but they had no effect on the B1bis tank units and could not get any penetrating shots just like the historical outcome. The German PzIVD unit has the best chance, but a H39 tank unit rolled a 12 and gave it a step loss with a demoralizing effect and three B1bis stacked together adjacent to German Infantry with a 33 direct fire value, can hurt Infantry whether they are in towns or dug-in or not.

In the end, the French controlled the town hexes of Stonne and all the 40-meter hill hexes for the victory.

Scenario FaoF023

The French counter attack at Stonne is depicted here. Its fair to say the French commander got off to a slow start and had some bad luck. The more mobile German tanks although inferior to the French B1's ren rings around the French attacking forces never really damaging them too much but distracting the French commander who was concerned about flanking shots. The French INF suffered at the hands of accurate German defensive fire and the result was not really in doubt from about halfway through the scenario.

A little to one sided to be a great scenario this one

Scenario FaoF023

This was a relatively short - but fun - 4-session, face-to-face battle with the intrepid & wildly innovative Tankodactyl playing the stouter, defending German side. I led the normally-hapless French attackers, that came out swinging. Oddly, the Germans drew a poor set of leaders who all ended up as casualties except for a single Captain who survived this serious shoot 'em up! It was very enjoyable to play this one on an actual table top with a significant amount of beer & chips/salsa inreach.

A considerable number of lucky French direct fire, OBA & close assault die rolls led to the rout of the Boche garrison in the 2-hex viilage of Stonne, as well as the end of both fiendish AT gun platoons by the end of game turn 6. The adjacent 40-meter hills was a much harder nut to crack for the weaker French infantry. Thankfully, the German armored reinforcement were critically delayed for 7 turns, allowing the combined arms French task force to slowly push the Germans off the hill with the heavy tanks being the lethal stars of this show. Likely, the French die rolling luck and the lack of the FOW, made this one much easier for the Allied side, that is to be expected in an attack against dug-in and stronger German units. We did use the consolidation & excess initiative optional rules.

This adventure mirrored the historical situation & result very well, with the victorious French side liberating the village as well as the hill mass by the end of game turn 14. I give this unbalanced scenario in favor of the German defenders a rating of 3, and it seems to me that is more suitable for SOLO, or Face-to-Face shared play. It is a decent training scenario with just enough room for maneuver and many decision points.
