Introduction |
---|
Motorized French infantry of the First Army rushed forward to meet the advancing German spearheads, but had little time to prepare positions to stop or at least slow the panzers. Near the old Wavre battlefield, the French dug in throughout the night and sent their trucks away as doctrine directed. Carefully placing their powerful new antitank guns, the troops and commanders hoped they would be enough to stop the Germans. Strong armored forces remained close at hand just in case they weren't. |
Conclusion |
---|
The French 47mm high-velocity anti-tank guns were no great surprise to the Germans, who had dealt with equally destructive (though less mobile) Soviet 76.2mm guns during the 1941 campaign in Russia. The new 75mm high-velocity gun proved a shock, however. The French gun outclassed anything in the German inventory and proved deadly even to the modified former Soviet T-34 tanks serving with 12th Panzer Division. |
