Introduction |
---|
Erwin Rommel left North Africa in March 1943 and spent the next year holding various commands in occupied Greece, Italy and France. Had the African campaign somehow continued during that time, the Desert Fox no doubt would have eventually returned to his old haunts. And a strong counter-offensive was a hallmark of Rommel's way of war. |
Conclusion |
---|
For every brilliant maneuver by the Desert Fox, there was at least one blunder to match it (usually falsely blamed on his Italian allies). Yet the Rommel Mystique greatly aided the Axis in North Africa: Allied soldiers and especially generals bought into it, and went into battle already intimidated. Would the same have held true in 1944, or would someone have finally noticed that none of Rommel's famous victories brought him any closer to the Suez Canal? |
