Introduction |
---|
Shortly before the German assault on Poland began, a small special operation tried to seize the bridge over the Vistula at Tczew. Polish railway workers alerted the garrison, who drove off the attackers and blew up the bridge. Later that day the Germans returned to make a conventional assault against the town and the crossing site with combat engineers and Waffen SS militia. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Polish riflemen fought off the German river crossing, and devastated the SS militia trying to attack from the west bank of the Vistula. The SS continued their weak attacks throughout the day but the Poles could not be dislodged from Tczew. During the night the rifle battalion slipped away as part of the general withdrawal of Army Pomorze. |

#14 The Crossing |
---|
Elements of a Polish Rifle Battalion were charged with defending a burned out bridge and a small town from a German advance from both the east and north. The German attacking force from the east was made up of a battalion of engineers who quickly got across the river in force with support from their 81mm mortars, OBA and a train, they cleared the approach’s to the town only to come under heavy fire from the Polish HMGs and a battery of French 75’s. To the North the SS had luck on their side as they advanced on the Polish left flank, a Polish 40mm AAA opened fire which demoralized all but a couple of platoons but it was knocked out by the timely arrival of a flight of Ju88s which glide bombed it into submission. Two platoons of SS supported by a MG platoon moved thru the woods to flank the town which helped the engineers clear all but one town hex for a German Major victory. |
