Introduction

After the fall of the other fortified camps, the last remaining outpost of the Libyan divisions, that at point 90, continued to resist. Repeated surrender demands met with shouted insults in both Italian and Arabic. A fresh assault went in the next morning.

Conclusion

Italy's Libyan forces represented life-long professionals (many recruited as young orphans of the Senussi War, and grown up in the Italian Army). Yet the sight of the other Italian fortified camps quickly collapsing unnerved them, and after only brief fighting they proved ready to give up.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Open-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables, but DO take step losses from X and #X results (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT). If a "2X" or "3X" result is rolled, at least one of the step losses must be taken by an open-top AFV if present.
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable
  • APC – Armored Personnel Carrier: These are Combat Units, but stack like Transports. They can transport personnel units or towed units. They are not counted as combat units for the +1 stacking modifier on the Direct Fire and Bombardment Tables (4.4). They may be activated by regular leaders and tank leaders (1.2, 3.34, 4.3, 5.43). They do not provide the +1 Assault bonus (ACC).

Scenario DeRa005

Italians set up entrenched and dug-in on both hill levels with artillery pieces on higher slope. Indians advanced slowly from the south with the Italians harassing them with artillery fire. Indians converged near southeast corner of hill and attacked forward positions. Two Matildas lumbered forward and eventually eliminated one of the artillery units while offboard artillery eliminated the other. Two large assaults tied down many troops for quite a number of turns. On the final turn the Italians tried an ill advised counterattack on some demoralized Indian troops that had just assaulted them, but bad rolling cost them a unit and gave the Indians the 6 destroyed units necessary to automatically win the game. All in all a very fun scenario that was very close.

Here is the first or second round of the Indian/British charge against the Libyan/Italians in Scenario Five, Libyan Defiance from Desert Rats. Nothing really is happening yet but movement. Just posted it to make your guys mouth water, and make you to play a scenario or two yourselves! Currently, I am on turn five and I have lost a loaded ACW with on Subedar Major-leader, one Infantry unit to a 47mm Italian AT gun on a 11 dice roll. I have sense demoralized the Italian gun with 36 points of off-board Artillery. I guess I better be more careful! I always get too close and get burned, will I never learn!

Well, I finished scenario 5: Libyan Defiance from Desert Rats tonight! Both sides achieved a victory which means it was a draw. The Indian/British troops occupied all 6 Libyan/Italian’s entrenchments and eliminated over eight steps but the Libyan/Italians but also had over eight Indian steps eliminated. Without the Surrender rule, the Indian/British side would not have made their objectives. Fixed positions can be frustrating! The Interesting thing about Desert Rats is; I have 7 zip-lock bags for it, one Italian, one Italian Colonial, one German, one British, one Indian, one New Zealand & one Marker bag. I always wanted to command an India Pattern Carrier (ACW).

Scenario DeRa005

Scenario DeRa005

This was another quick play, do solely to the Desert Rats version of the Surrender rule being brutal. Lest i go into another rant on it, Afrika Korps provided ways to mitigate the effects and had smaller groups of tanks hitting long stretches of trenches. South Africa nerfed the ability for tanks to call for surrender. Here, set ups force dense packing of defenders on one hill and there are ample tanks. They drive up, call for surrender and its game over pretty quickly.

Seeing as the tanks are Matildas, the only chance the Italians have are to plan on counter assaulting ASAP which requires them to be packed even tighter together. They must survive the surrender calls and roll well in assaults. Then deal with the rest of the Allies...

Same thing happens through the last three scenarios. Italian routs due to surrender in the face of Matildas. Nothing really noteworthy aside from that.
