Introduction |
---|
German intelligence identified a critical weakness in a Soviet bridgehead. About 40 kilometers southeast of Iasi the Jijia River joins the Prut River. The Soviets held a bridgehead somewhat north of there but the units there lacked any supporting armor. This made them highly vulnerable to an armored counter-stroke if the attacking panzers could concentrate in their assembly areas without undue notice. Lacking sufficient strength for an all-out attack, the Germans planned Operation Sonja as a limited operation designed to drive the Soviets back over the Jijia River East of Carpiti. |
Conclusion |
---|
Operation Sonja jumped off at 0400 after a heavy artillery bombardment. Around 0900 Kampfgruppe W started to contest their first objective, Hill 198 (the 60-meter hill on Board 104). After committing their armor they secured the hill and veered off to their left to take the fortified town of Stânca (the town on Board 103). The Eighth Army considered that a satisfactory result according to their war diary. |
