Introduction |
---|
German and Soviet Divisions attacked constantly during the bitter fighting for the Tashlyk Bridgehead, going forward several times each day for the little gain. Chuikov informed Third Ukrainian Front that the Germans were tiring, yet despite his re-assurances the bridgehead continued to shrink. Seeking to save face with his superiors, Chuikov ordered his own tired troops back into action again. |
Conclusion |
---|
The Soviets advanced slowly, and after bitter fighting managed to take part of what Chuikov called "an unnamed hill" thanks to close-range support from a rocket-launching battery. But they could not take all of the hill and later in the morning 13th Panzer Division brought to bear what remained of its armored strength -- a dozen tanks -- and threw the Soviets back off the hill. The bridgehead continued to contract. |
