Introduction |
---|
The German intelligence gathering on the Soviet forces in and around the Tashlyk Bridgehead during the previous month had produced excellent results. They managed to pinpoint the location and timing of almost all relief-in-place operations, and identified when Soviet units overextended themselves. In one such incident in the Dneister "bottle" during the night of May 15th-16th, 14th Panzer Division crossed over into the bottle at Korzhevo while 11th Panzer Division did the same from the opposite side of the oxbow. With 11th Panzer attacking from the west, 14th Panzer split its troops to the north and south. |
Conclusion |
---|
The overextended Soviets had planned to cross the Dniester on the preceding day but canceled the operation. It appears they concentrated on resuming the offensive instead of strengthening their defenses. The Germans recognized this vulnerability and easily crossed on both sides of the oxbow and immediately started and advancing in all directions. At Perrytoe 14th Panzer employed few tanks due to the unsuitable terrain but quickly cleared the defenders from the village and the nearby woods. The fighting raged on for a few more days to the north and concluded in the Germans' favor. |
