Introduction |
---|
To the right of 24th Panzer Division, Maj. Gen. Kurt Röpke's 46th Infantry Division had orders to advance against Col. V.P. Kolesnikov's 206th Rifle Division holding a salient protruding into the German lines. The hard-luck 46th Infantry, recruited from Sudeten Germans of the former Czechoslovakia, had been declared "forfeit of soldierly honor" in late 1942 for an unauthorized retreat but had shown better performance in the years that followed. With the help of some assault guns from 24th Panzer, Eighth Army command hoped they could redeem themselves on Hill 192. |
Conclusion |
---|
The timely help from 24th Panzer Division allowed the Sudeten outfit to break the Soviet 206th Rifle Division and roll up their positions on Hill 192. The Soviet riflemen streamed to the rear as Marshal Konev hurriedly dispatched Sixteenth Tank Corps from the reserve to restore the situation. The Red tankers failed to retake the hill, losing the ground they'd paid so dearly to capture. |
