Introduction

On all heavily trodden battlefields, certain places take on an importance out of proportion to their military value. Hill 256 (the vantage point from which "Those Brave Boys" helped stop the Soviets) fit the bill for the second round of Târgu Frumos. Now the shoe was on the other foot as Grossdeutschland's engineers had failed to retake the heights three days in a row. Maybe a fourth try would yield success?

Conclusion

Despite Grossdeutschland's claims of conquering the hill, the Soviets actually rebuffed their first attack. The Germans then assembled their Panther battalion and added a panzer grenadier battalion riding in armored halftracks to finally drive the enemy from the symbolic hill. Although the Germans felt they had redeemed their honor, Marshal Konev ordered the corps and artillery commanders responsible for the sector brought before a military tribunal for this loss of face. Stavka recognized the men as good soldiers and let them off with a reprimand, also recognizing that Konev sought to deflect blame for the defeat.
