Introduction |
---|
While fighting continued in the suburbs approaching Târgu Frumos from the north, tying up a good portion of their infantry, Soviet mobile elements pushed on toward the small city center of Târgu Frumos. Thirteen new-model, heavily-armored Joseph Stalin-2 tanks, each mounting a hard-hitting 122mm gun, led the charge. As both their infantry regiments remained embattled to the north, Grossdeutschland's own panzers responded to stop the incursion. |
Conclusion |
---|
The fighting opened with 25 Soviet tanks attempting to take Târgu Frumos from the north in a bold coup-de-main. A hidden 88mm battery broke up the attempt, and after the Soviets regrouped the heaviest tanks on each side became engaged in a long-range sniper battle. The German tanks came out on top of that contest, and the Soviet attack came to a halt as their tankers contented themselves with long-range fire. The heavy panzers then moved east to assist the German fusiliers struggling at Corntesi. General Hasso von Manteuffel earned his sobriquet as the Panzer Lion -- his forces severely crippled Second Ukrainian Front's offensive ability while suffering negligible losses. |
