Introduction

The lead elements of 78th Guards Rifle Division crossed from the east to the west side of the Dniester River on 1 April to drive on the town Susleni. Once they captured Susleni, the more important town of Orhei would fall like a ripe plum from the grasp of the Axis, or so the Soviet command believed. As the Soviets advanced south to Susleni they encountered their first serious opposition at the village of Biesti in modern-day Moldova.

Conclusion

The Guardsmen swung into action right away, but the veteran Germans lay in wait. The capture of Biesti took two days of heavy fighting before the Guards stood unopposed in the rubble of the secured village.

Scenario BrAx001

It seems like an undramatic scenario. No armour, lots of mud and a horde of Soviet Guards trying to move across the map to roust the Wehracht from Biesti and also attempt to withdraw units from the opposite map edge.

The Germans placed an HMG on the rightmost hill close to the Guard deployment map edge and a string of units across the map in front of Biesti. Opportunity fire and artillery helped slow down the Soviets. Some very lucky, or perhaps accurate, artillery fire laid waste to one stack of Soviet infantry and the forces commander. This slowed down what was already a ponderous advance. The Soviets did manage to push the HMG off the hill to the east of the town but at some cost. Once there they spilled down the right flank of the map but were stopped by an infantry gun and infantry that had relocated into the woods south-east of Biesti.

The soviets came close to taking the town but were pushed back by the German troops.

Scenario BrAx001

The German Commander set up a very difficult line for the Russians to break. It was only within the last hour of the scenario that it was beginning to crumble. No objectives at all for the Russians. The dilemma came up (again) as to whether to attempt a pinpoint breakthrough, which would enevitably allow the enemy to reinforce the threatened area, or to try to crumble the whole line, keeping the enemy from reinforcing any threatened point. (Oh, the worries of Command!)
