Introduction |
---|
The American 2nd Armored Division had driven into the flank and rear of the 2nd SS Reich Panzer Division, shooting up its supply lines and presenting a threat the Germans could not ignore. At about 1300 hours, the Americans began a successful effort to secure Le Gue Rochoux. As soon as they had occupied the village they were subjected to a heavy artillery barrage. Orders to continue advancing were quickly countermanded and the units were ordered to prepare for a counterattack: the German LVIII Panzer Corps had diverted the 10th SS Frundsburg Panzer Division from the drive on Avranches to rescue the Reich Division instead. |
Conclusion |
---|
The anticipated counterattack was not long in coming. A German combined-arms force attempted to force their way down the Ger-Barenton road and were defeated in a duel by the accompanying American armor. Some panzer grenadiers manged to infiltrate and secure a crossroad behind the Americans, but a counterattack soon cleared up that situation. |
