Introduction

The American II Corps had greatly improved its staff work and leadership, enabling it to quickly organize a counter-attack of their own after the Blackshirts’ successful assault on 1st Armored Division’s positions. Strong air and artillery support, along with better tanks, gave the American planners and their commander, George S. Patton, a great deal of confidence as the attack began.

Conclusion

Royal Italian Army mobile formations had excelled at defense against British tank attacks in the Western Desert, relying on their big 88mm and 90mm anti-aircraft batteries to devastate approaching armor while the infantry protected the guns from the enemy foot soldiers. That was the intent when the 88mm guns were substituted for conventional artillery in the Blackshirt division.
