Introduction |
---|
The opening moves of Operation Jupiter involved securing the ground between the Odon bridgehead and the Esquay-Caen road. Assisted by the 9th Royal Tank Regiment, the two lead battalions of infantry would attack following a 15 minute barrage by the guns of four divisions of VIII Corps, the heavy guns of 3rd and 8th Army Groups Royal Artillery, and for really important targets, the heavy guns of the battleship 'Rodney', cruiser 'Belfast' and monitor 'Roberts'. The soldiers of the 22nd SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment's 1st and 2nd battalions were unprepared for the weight of the barrage. |
Conclusion |
---|
The heavy British artillery barrage shook the frontline German infantry and many positions in and immediately behind the front were hard hit. The soldiers of the two lead British battalions and the two follow-up battalions quickly reached their initial objective line, although with heavy casualties, and continued their assault through to the second phase. They managed to capture the village of Maltot, but a counter-attack led by Tigers of the 102nd SS Heavy Tank Battalion forced them out. |
