Introduction |
---|
Ordered on the morning of the 28th to attack the British corridor, the commander of the IInd SS Panzer Corps could only reply that he would be unable to do so until the 29th as many of his units had not yet arrived. The army commander, General Dollman, was so distraught that he committed suicide. The attack was delayed by Allied air and ground attacks until finally launched at 1400 on the 29th. |
Conclusion |
---|
Heavy British artillery fire and constant ground attacks by Allied aircraft delayed the attack until to mid-afternoon. The 19th SS Panzer Grenadier Regt gained some ground initially, even retaking Grainville briefly before being driven back by a fierce British counter-attack. Even the late arrival of elements of the 20th Panzer Grenadier failed to regain the initiative. British reserve units, particularly the armour and anti-tank units in support of the 15th Scottish Division, stood strong. 9th SS Panzer everywhere withdrew to their starting positions. |
