Introduction

Although not entirely successful, the German attack from the east had captured Mouen and in conjunction with the attack from the west narrowed the corridor to less than 3,000 yards. The 10th Highland Light infantry of 15th (Scottish) Division's 227th Infantry Brigade was ordered to retake the town. Directed to clear the area west of Mouen, th 159th Brigade's 4rh King's Shopshire Light Infantry Regiment would operate in conjunction with the HLI.

Conclusion

The British attack managed to eject the Germans from Mouen, but could not hold the town and withdrew to the west. The defense of the corridor was assured for another day, but not secured. The 29th would bring even more fighting to the fields of Normandy as each side sought to finally overwhelm the other.

Display Relevant AFV Rules

AFV Rules Pertaining to this Scenario's Order of Battle
  • Vulnerable to results on the Assault Combat Chart (7.25, 7.63, ACC), and may be attacked by Anti-Tank fire (11.2, DFT). Anti-Tank fire only affects the individual unit fired upon (7.62, 11.0).
  • AFV's are activated by tank leaders (3.2, 3.3, 5.42, 6.8). They may also be activated as part of an initial activating stack, but if activated in this way would need a tank leader in order to carry out combat movement.
  • AFV's do not block Direct Fire (10.1).
  • Full-strength AFV's with "armor efficiency" may make two anti-tank (AT) fire attacks per turn (either in their action segment or during opportunity fire) if they have AT fire values of 0 or more (11.2).
  • Each unit with an AT fire value of 2 or more may fire at targets at a distance of between 100% and 150% of its printed AT range. It does so at half its AT fire value. (11.3)
  • Efficient and non-efficient AFV's may conduct two opportunity fires per turn if using direct fire (7.44, 7.64). Units with both Direct and AT Fire values may use either type of fire in the same turn as their opportunity fire, but not both (7.22, 13.0). Units which can take opportunity fire twice per turn do not have to target the same unit both times (13.0).
  • Demoralized AFV's are not required to flee from units that do not have AT fire values (14.3).
  • Place a Wreck marker when an AFV is eliminated in a bridge or town hex (16.3).
  • AFV's do not benefit from Entrenchments (16.42).
  • AFV's may Dig In (16.2).
  • Open-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables, but DO take step losses from X and #X results (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT). If a "2X" or "3X" result is rolled, at least one of the step losses must be taken by an open-top AFV if present.
  • Closed-top AFV's: Immune to M, M1 and M2 results on Direct and Bombardment Fire Tables. Do not take step losses from Direct or Bombardment Fire. If X or #X result on Fire Table, make M morale check instead (7.25, 7.41, 7.61, BT, DFT).
  • Closed-top AFV's: Provide the +1 modifier on the Assault Table when combined with infantry. (Modifier only applies to Germans in all scenarios; Soviet Guards in scenarios taking place after 1942; Polish, US and Commonwealth in scenarios taking place after 1943.) (ACC)
  • Tank: all are closed-top and provide the +1 Assault bonus, when applicable
  • Tank Destroyer: do not provide the +1 Assault bonus, even if closed-top (SB)
  • APC – Armored Personnel Carrier: These are Combat Units, but stack like Transports. They can transport personnel units or towed units. They are not counted as combat units for the +1 stacking modifier on the Direct Fire and Bombardment Tables (4.4). They may be activated by regular leaders and tank leaders (1.2, 3.34, 4.3, 5.43). They do not provide the +1 Assault bonus (ACC).

Panzer Grenadier Beyond Normandy Scenario 19: 10th HLI at Mouen. 28 June 1944.

1830 hrs: British attack jumps off with AT fires against the German tanks and an airstrike. No effect. Inf moves out.

1845 hrs: The Shropshires make progress and start to flank the SS in the SE. The Highlanders stall unable to advance.

1900 hrs As the SS fall back to cover their left flank, the Shropshires move forward. No combat in this sector.

1900 hrs Typhoons hit the Panthers with no effect. Highlanders remain stalled, the SS rallies and fires mortars.

Note that because of lack of time for the Brits to coordinate, 2 is added to the Fog of War roll and the turns are ending early.

1915 hrs Exchanges of small arms, mortar and artillery fires have no effect throughout the sector. Typhoons hit with no effect. No picture.

1930 hrs The Highlanders and London Yeomanry move out and close with the Panthers whose position is now in peril.

1945 hrs Shermans fire on Panthers forcing them to abandon their position. Arty duel in HLI sector to little effect.

2000 hrs: artillery duel continues. Brit aircraft ineffective again. PZ I'VE plt in 2015 kills the Firefly plt in 1714.

2015: most action with the 4th KSLI as they close with the SS. The 10th HLI takes a beating from the SS infantry fire.

2030: the Brits make a big push across the whole line taking and causing casualties. SS line holds but not yet decisive.

2045 the 4th KSLI slowly pushes the SS back, killing a PZ IV platoon. The SS try to constrict their perimeter.

2045 in the 10th HLI sector a furious tank battle results in Panthers killing most Sherman's of the 3d CoLY.

2100 hrs, the turn lasts longer than any other as both sides pass the Fog of War rolls until almost everyone has moved or fired.

2100 the 4th KSLI continues to push, the SS stops the penetration killing two steps and falls back once again.

2100 in the 10th HLI sector it has turned into a stalemated battalion sized firefight.

2115 SS counter attacks the 4KSLI while the Shropshires feed more infantry into sector. Firefights continue elsewhere.

2130 firefights and city fighting across the sector. SS moves Panthers and infantry to the south to counterattack.

2145 night falls, the SS push into the 4KSLI but the Brits hold. 10HLI make push into the German sector.

Going to call it a draw two turns early. The SS cannot push all the 4th KSLI units out of the victory area in two more turns.

The Brits cannot take Mouen. Thus there are forces of the other sides in each victory condition area and it is a draw. Bloody fight.

The British suffer 37 casualty points, the Germans just 10. The 3d County of London Yeomanry lost all but three Shermans!

The low Fog of War level (14 insread of 16) caused the British to not be able to concentrate power when needed.

The high morale rating of the SS allowed them to shrug off much of the British artillery and air attacks or recover quickly.

And the British thus could not capitalize on any success.

The Shropshires, however, were aggressive and assualted without softening up the SS positions; it paid off as they pushed the Germans back.
