Introduction |
---|
In the move forward of the 159th Infantry Brigade during the previous night, the 3rd Monmouths had mistakenly halted at Mouen, a small village to the east of their intended objective of Tourville. Realizing their error, the battalion moved out the next morning, leaving a single company behind to hold the village until relieved. Unbeknownst to the British, the eastern wing of the German operation to sever the British corridor was scheduled to move through Mouen that very morning. Dawn found the British soldiers in Mouen awaiting relief by the 15th Scottish Division, unaware that they stood between the British forces moving south in the corridor and the tank-heavy German forces bearing down on them from Caen. |
Conclusion |
---|
The German attack from the east began poorly when the promised artillery support from 12th SS was not forthcoming. Nevertheless the two SS infantry battalions and their tank support left Verson in the early morning hours and by noon had taken Mouen and reached the eastern edge of Tourville. The British managed to slow the German advance by mid-day. Massive British artillery, allied air support and the presence of units moving south in the corridor made the difference. In the afternoon the British would counterattack. |
