The determined & flexible, Isra3lite led attacking German elements of the 292nd Infantry Division in the short, but intense, 1-map introductory scenario. I had the defending Soviet elements of the 307th Rifle Division. Soviets drew middling leaders, the Germans selected a better set. We used the FOW, consolidation, smoke/Illum and excess initiative optional rules. As well as these 2 house rules: 1) Road Movement for Mechanized & Foot Units - All FOOT & MECHANIZED units may move on roads at the rate of 1/2 of a Movement Point (MP) per road hex, just like MOTORIZED units, and 2) Standardized Movement for Mechanized Units — All mechanized units may move through clear hexes at a movement cost of only 1 movement point (MP) per hex, instead of 1 1/2. Add one to this cost if moving up, across, or down slopes hexes. Our first & only session (game turns 1-7) initially featured an extended German movement to contact from the north edge onto the small 20-meter hill in the northeast corner of the map, while the STG-IIIG assault gun platoon approached separately, down the western edge of the map. This AFV had the bad luck of drawing into range of the sole Russian AT gun that quickly dispatched it during the 2nd game turn. The balance of the German force slowly & deliberately advanced into decisive range of the Soviet defensive positions in the farmer’s fields just north of the 1st of May State Farm (Hex 43-0907). There, the Wehrmacht attack stalled in a series of withering adjacent hex firefights. During game turn 8, the Germans conceded the game when there was no real chance of them approaching and taking the State Farm in the time remaining. We both give this one an enthusiastic rating of 4, and recommend it for both SOLO and SHARED play. |
