The Naval Gunfire Sailed high above the heads of the German gun position and the Panzer Grenadier platoon on duty. Shortly before dawn they spotted an a group of American Paratroopers heading there way. Shots rang out from both sides but appeared to be largely ineffective. This fire went on for 30 minutes or so as the Ami's continued their advance toward the Gun Position. The Grenadiers from the Barracks finally answered the phone and fired at the Para's in the flank as they advanced causing minor confusion. Feldwebel Schultz so a lone figure dash to the rear(US 2nd Lt compound morale failure) The Amis advanced to just outside the town and took their first casualties but not before knocking out the brave comrades manning our infantry gun as they assaulted with bayonets and grenades. The barracks sent reinforcements in(From the other town)Allowing us to counterattack without much effect. The battle raged on as we poured more fire into the Ami's and they into us at close range with grenades and bayonets. We lost a full platoon but so had the Ami's. In the end we had little left and the Para's withdrew. We cheered we had won...only to find that later in the day that American infantry was coming up from the beaches in enormous numbers. We ran. |
