Introduction |
---|
The Polish Army fought fanatically to hold Warsaw, infuriating Germany's Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler. Hitler ordered the the Polish capital be subjected to terror attacks, and 425 bombers promptly attacked residential neighborhoods while heavy artillery targeted them as well before the troops went forward in a new round of assaults on the city's suburbs. |
Conclusion |
---|
Fort Mokotow, built by the Russians in the 19th century, was no longer a modern fortification but still posed a serious obstacle. The Poles fought off the German assaults, but the terror attacks caused serious dissension in Army Warsaw's headquarters. Many officers wanted to keep fighting - they had food and ammunition for weeks of resistance, Warsaw had a sufficient garrison, the Germans had made few if any gains, and surely the French would soon move against Germany's nearly-undefended western frontier. But the Germans had already slaughtered 25,000 civilians with their deliberate attacks, and Gen. Juliusz Rómmel, savior of Poland in the 1920 war with the Soviet Union, could not allow the killing to continue. The next evening he requested surrender terms, and on 27 September 140,000 Polish soldiers laid down their arms. |

Poles Hold Out Till The End |
---|
Poles put up fierce resistance but the overpowering German aircraft and offboard artillery was just too much to overcome. In the end the Germans continued to push up the hill and captured all the entrenchment hexes to claim victory, but it was veeeery close. This one was a nailbiter to the end and could easily go either way. I can see playing this one again, and again, and again... |

Once Again, A Close Fought Affair |
---|
I had played this scenario a week earlier and had so much fun I thought I'd try it again. Both sides performed pretty much the same as they had previously with the German OBA and aircraft proving devastating. The Poles held out as long as possible, but the Germans once again prevailed. |

Poles decimated in valiant defence |
---|
The Germans had a strong force of 30 platoons a very strong offmap artillery group supported by 3 aircraft and 4 mortars. The Poles had a much smaller force of 12 platoons and more limited ATG’s mortars and some off map arty. A Black Monday indeed. The Poles setup with delaying forces in the two woods and the town, with the final defence on the main hill. The Germans setup off map with the intention of the main attacking force moving through the large woods on the right flank to establish an attack on the main hill from the edge of the woods. The Germans swept through the large woods with the Poles in full retreat. The attackers then swept through most of the town in the centre, with one Polish force holding out for some time. On the left flank the Germans quickly overcame the token force and moved through the second woods and town, and begun to swing around and attack the main objective from the west. After some difficulty closing in on the base of the main hill, the Germans crushed most of the main resistance. Two pockets held out for some time, with the last defenders holding out until the penultimate turn. Overall it was an easy win for the attackers, but the Poles held out until the end due to good morale and some very effective leaders. |
