| Introduction |
|---|
|
The Army division had finally made progress in the last days of June, despite the determination of the Japanese to delay them and Ogawa’s skillful deployments. The Fighting Sixty-Ninth’s 2nd Battalion would conclude the operation, new division commander Maj. Gen. George Griner directed, by taking the last Japanese outposts on Purple Heart Ridge. |
| Conclusion |
|---|
|
The Americans noted lighter resistance than expected; having accomplished their task, Ogawa’s men had been ordered to make their way north to the new line of resistance. The Americans had taken heavy casualties in clearing Death Valley; it’s impossible to sort out Japanese losses for this period but they were also heavy and, unlike those of the Americans, could not be replaced. |

Saipan 2nd Edition, scenario #32: Purple Heart Ridge I have gotten better attacking Japanese fixed positions over the last couple of scenarios, getting those ENG & FLM modifiers in assaults against entrenchments & town hexes, especially the FLM unit to cancel out the Fire-First of Dug-In & Entrenchment enemy units. If lose the FLM unit, it feels like a morale defeat as I know I’ll lose a lot more steps assaulting without them. Having additional Infantry counters to feed into assaults as the morale of other units fail is another thing to keep in mind. In this scenario, the American Army units get a huge assist in air-support every turn as well as artillery and it felt good to have so much support and finally take a difficult terrain area like Purple Heart Ridge. The American did lose 3 steps and one leader, but the Japanese lost 13 steps, and three leaders and the Americans won a Major Victory in the process! |
