Introduction |
---|
Had the German airborne invaders of Ireland managed to defeat their initial opponents, they would need to march quickly to secure a port through which supplies could arrive. The Irish had made plans to blow up the facilities at the large port of Cork (Cobh) but do not seem to have done the same for Waterford, a smaller port lying somewhat upstream on the River Suir. While Waterford lacked the facilities of Cobh - it would only become a major port when it was moved to a new location in the 1990s - it sported a convenient location and fewer defenders. |
Conclusion |
---|
Ireland sported hedgerows every bit as extensive and thick as those of Normandy: over 400,000 kilometers of them, in a country of just over 70,000 square kilometers. To make any progress against even mildly determined defenders, the German paratroopers would have to fight their way through intense hedgerow country without the tanks and heavy weapons that the Allies used in similar terrain in Normandy in 1944. Would their immensely high morale and strong leadership be enough to overcome the Irish countryside? |

This was a nighmare scenario to play as the outnumbered, attacking German Paras in nearly the most godawful terrain imaginable. (Saipan and Guadalcanal is worse!) I got my head handed to me by the cunning Treadasaur in what I think was an unplaytested scenario from hell. I give this abomination a generous 3, mostly because it was fun to play over beer during St Paddy's Day weekend, in 3 lengthy sessions. At least this drudgery helped me to learn how to move, and to spot (LOS) the bad guys in bocage county. It is probably better suited to SOLO play, but I blame myself for picking the Germans side in what became a costly Irish victory. |

I heartily concur. IMHO, this miserable - and unpronounceable - scenario is suited for SOLO play only and was not properly play tested, or designed.
Then again, we had fun playing it with the correct amount of Guiness to maintain our hydration & help kill the pain of the many steps lost in the process.
The good news is that you only need to play one more Operation Green scenario for Shad to award you some kind of PG-HQ campaign ribbon and perhaps a promotion as well.
Didn't I warn you about not jumping out of perfectly good airplanes?
