Introduction

The Japanese 30th Division left one battalion at Maramag to halt the American advance up Sayre Highway while the rest of the division escaped into the mountains. The 124th Infantry would need to get past this roadblock before turning into the rear area of the 100th Infantry Division. So far, Japanese attempts to stop the American advance had not amounted to much more than speed bumps, if that.

Conclusion

Until now, the Japanese troops of 30th Infantry Division had folded whenever confronted by the Americans. This time they fought with fanatical courage, and despite being vastly out-numbered and out-gunned, they held their ground for six days. That allowed the rest of the division to pull back into the rugged wilderness, but in the end did not save their comrades from starvation, disease, and death.

Additional Notes

The American I&R comes from Leyte '44.

Mindanao 1945, scenario #7: Defiant Stand at Maramag

I felt the Americans had enough forces to accomplish their three objectives this time compared to the previous scenario but the Japanese setup two entrenchments on the north-south road plus the town hex. Add to this, to the fact that the Japanese have a morale of 8/8, so you pretty much need to eliminate them. The Americans had the one objective of eliminating a two to one advantage in casualties but couldn’t clear the north-south road in time, as on the last turn the Japanese move an Infantry unit on the far northern road hexes and the Americans never attempted to exit units, so only achieving one out of three victory objects, the Japanese win a minor victory. I feel if there was one more turn, they would have cleared the north-south road I also feel, they maybe should have gave up ten turns earlier on clearing the road and exited units but the terrain was really rough but the Japanese would have had to pull units out of defending the road to go block American units flanking them. A close scenario no matter what.
